Me: Harry, you’re new to music. How are you finding it?
Harry: pretty good so far actually. It’s a big business so it’s quite intimidating for a guy like me but I’m looking forward to getting my music out there.
Me: so how did you get into music?
Harry: well it started when I was about 10 my dad brought me a guitar for my birthday and I started learning chords to my favourite songs. I used to do performances to my family and my grandma pointed out I had a good singing voice. When I was 11 my mum found a vocal coach and I started singing more often. I only started doing gigs when I was 17 because I’m not very confident and I had only felt comfortable performing in front of my family. Once I started though I got into it and it wasn’t as scary. At one point me and my two good mates Danny and Amy formed a band. ‘The Real Bananas’. Danny was an amazing guitarist and Amy plays the drums so we thought it could be cool to make a band together.
Me: You were in a band?
Harry: yeah but only for about 5 months then there was an argument cos Danny and Amy were dating and they had a messy breakup. It caused a lot of tension so we decided it wouldn’t work and split. Danny still plays guitar and sings now. I go to all his gigs to support him.
Me: so what’s it like to suddenly be thrown into the music business?
Harry: crazy. I remember one day I was doing a gig at a local music festival and afterwards I got approached by this guy and he said he liked my music and the way I sang and wanted to sign me to a record company. I was in shock for a few minutes but we discussed it over coffee and I got signed which was awesome!
Me: that must have been cool. Do you write your own songs then?
Harry: yeah I do. Since I got that guitar on my 10th birthday I started writing songs and music to go with it. I like writing songs inspired by rock and roll. It was a big part of my life growing up I always enjoyed listening to it.
Me: Is rock and roll your main inspiration?
Harry: I guess it does inspire me it’s not the only thing that does. When I was growing up I listened to bands like Busted and Queen and I recently rediscovered my love of Scouting for girls. I also get inspiration when I’m out and about and when I’m with my friends. I sometimes find it hard to think of things to write about so I go out to this spot near where I live, out in a forest, where I can just sit and think. It’s actually where I got the inspiration to write most of the songs from my first album.
Me: oh yeah you have your first album coming out soon!
Harry: yeah it comes out April 3rd.
Me: that’s awesome. I can’t wait to hear it. So you got inspiration while sitting in a forest?
Harry: yeah I often find that I need to be outside, I often can’t concentrate when I’m inside, so I go to this forest near my house to think. And yeah its where I wrote most of the songs for this new album.
Me: so what kind of music do you listen to now?
Harry: I like artists like Ed Sheeran coshes kinda like me cos he sings and plays guitar. I’m really into finding new artists actually cos there’s a lot of talent out there that’s ignored because everyone likes listening to popular trends. Everyone just follows the crowd these days I like the stay separate and listen to what I want to listen to not what people think I should be listening to. So yeah I like smaller artists that aren’t very well known like I listened to Ellie Goulding a lot before she became popular.
Me: when you’re not writing or doing gigs what kind of things do you get up to?
Harry: well I actually have quite a few odd hobbies. Umm I go quad biking and I actually really enjoy skiing.
Me: they are some pretty cool hobbies! How did you get into them?
Harry: well basically I live in quite a rural area and when I was younger one of my best friends lived on a farm and had these quadbikes and we used to just go riding around the farm on these bikes and I really got into it. I plan on getting a quad as soon as possible. And since I was young I’ve been going on family holidays to France to go skiing and though I’m not particularly good it’s just something I enjoy.
Me: yeah they are some pretty cool hobbies. Back to music then. What are you planning now you’ve been signed?
Harry: well I’ve just released by new album “HARRY” and I’m already writing songs ready for my next album. Hopefully the first one is successful and I get to carry on making music for people to listen to. I love what I do so I’ll be happy to carry on and make more albums.
